Berber Living Heritage

Weaving, music, mint tea — the slower side of the south.

Experiences

Spend an afternoon with a Berber weaving cooperative, learn the meaning of the symbols woven into the rugs, then drive to Khamlia for an evening of Gnawa rhythms with the descendants of sub-Saharan musicians. End with a slow dinner of pastilla and tagine.

We work with three cooperatives across the region — women who weave each rug as a personal language, every diamond, every line a memory. Our cooking class shares the chef's secret to a perfectly layered pastilla. Our Gnawa evening at Khamlia is shared, not staged — guests are welcomed into a circle that begins after dinner and ends when the fire dies.

Be present

Welcome at the table

  • Bread is shared, broken not cut — tear off a piece, no knives.
  • Eat from the slice of the tagine in front of you — never reach across.
  • Compliment the cook before reaching for seconds — it's the heart of the meal.

— The Xaluca team

Bring back home

Souvenirs that matter

  • Hand-woven kilim from a co-op in the Dadès — small, foldable, never out of style.
  • Argan oil pressed in front of you, sealed and dated — accept no substitutes.
  • A small piece of fossilised marble from Erfoud — 400 million years in your suitcase.

— The Xaluca team

Words to learn

Three words go a long way

  • Azul — hello in Tamazight, the Berber language of the south.
  • Shukran — thank you, in Darija (Moroccan Arabic).
  • Inshallah — 'if God wills'. Used for everything from rain to a 6 a.m. wake-up.
