A few kilometres from Kasbah Hotel Tombouctou, Khamlia is a small village known for preserving the Gnawa musical tradition — a cultural expression listed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Its inhabitants keep alive a legacy passed down through generations, made of hypnotic rhythms, ceremonial chants and a deep connection to their African roots.

The visit usually begins in a traditional house where the musicians welcome guests with a live performance on the guembri (a three-string bass lute) and the great metal castanets known as krakebs. Beyond the show itself, it is an opportunity to understand the history of these communities and the role the ancient Saharan trade routes played in shaping them.

After the performance you can stroll through the village, meet its inhabitants, discover small artisan workshops or share a Moroccan tea while learning more about everyday life on the edge of the dunes.
